belongs to the class III of the intermediate filament (IF) proteins highly specific to astrocytes which function as nerve cells in the brain a n d in the central nervous system (CNS) (1-2). Two other class III IF proteins, nestin a n d vimentin, dominate in immature astrocytes, while GFAP is most abundant in mature astrocytes (3). GFAP is used as a marker to distinguish astrocytes f o r m other glial cells during development. Mutations in GFAP cause Alex a n d er disease, a rare dis o r der of the CNS. Most frequent mutations are located at Arginine 79 o r 239 (4).
