whose kinase activity plays a key role in various cellular functions, including apoptosis, glycogen synthesis, a n d cell growth . Akt1/PKBa is activated by various growth a n d survival fact o r s (1). Phosph o r ylation on Thr308, Ser473 a n d Tyr474 is required f o r full activity. Akt1/PKBa inhibits apoptosis by phosph o r ylating a n d inactivating several targets, including caspase-9 (2). Akt1/PKBa regulates glycogen synthesis by phosph o r ylating a n d inactivating glycogen synthase kinase-3a a n d b (3,4). Three mammalian Akt1/PKBa isof o r ms have been identified. WB: 1:10,000 A.
