immune system are strengthened by antigen- nonspecific interactions, mediated in part by lymphocyte-function associated (LFA) antigens. Recently, ICAM-1 (intercellular adhesion molecule-1) has been defined as a lig a n d f o r LFA-1. Monoclonal antibodies to ICAM-1 block T lymphocyte adhesion to fibroblasts a n d endothelial cells a n d disrupt the interaction between cytotoxic T cells a n d target cells. ICAM-1 is found on leukocytes, fibroblasts, epithelial cells a n d endothelial cells a n d its expression is regulated by inflammat o r y cytokines (1). The n o r mal function of human intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) is to provide adhesion between endothelial cells a n d leukocytes after injury o r stress. However, ICAM-1 is also used as a recept o r by the maj o r group of human rhinoviruses a n d is a catalyst f o r the subsequent viral uncoating during cell entry (2).
