Background Alpha-1-antitrypsin 1-1 (Serpin A1a; AAT) is the most abundant circulating serine protease inhibitor (serpin) and the prototypic member of the serpin super family. The 52-kD Serpin A1a protein is coded by the gene SERPINA1. Serpin A1a plays an important role in modulating immunity, inflammation, proteostasis, apoptosis, and possibly cellular senescence programs. Systemic deficiency in Serpin A1a due to genetic mutations can result in liver failure and chronic lung disease such as emphysema[1]. |
